About Cambridge Industries
Cambridge Heavy Industries (CHI) is building compact, benchtop-scale fusion reactors. Using synchronized multi-ring laser shocks developed over two decades in Prof. Keith Nelson’s lab at MIT, our system achieves more than 400x higher compression efficiency than conventional laser fusion, with off-the-shelf components. Neutrons are our first product, serving markets that pay well before energy breakeven: isotope production (including tritium and medical isotopes), neutron imaging and testing, heat-management qualification, reactor-material testing – with the ultimate goal of energy production. CHI is based at The Engine in Cambridge, MA.
The Opportunity
CHI is hiring its first business development lead to turn a breakthrough platform into commercial traction and revenue. Working directly with the CEO, CFO, and scientific founders, you will decide which markets we enter first, build relationships with customers and partners, and own the pipeline from first conversation to signed agreements to successful customer programs.
Responsibilities
Markets & Customers
Map and prioritize CHI’s initial markets: verticals, competitive landscape, economics, and minimally viable products
Develop deep and broad roster of customers and partners; identify and close strategic partnerships that accelerate the company’s development
Pipeline & Deals
Build and manage a pipeline of commercial demonstrations, paid pilots, service agreements, and offtakes.
Develop business models and initial pricing.
Government & Partnerships
Pursue non-dilutive funding across DOE, DoD, and state programs, owning the commercial sections of proposals.
Build national lab and university partnerships for testing, validation, and facility access.
Supply market and customer evidence for investor updates and board materials.
Qualifications
Required
3–8 years in business development or commercial strategy, including time at an early-stage deep-tech, energy, or industrial company.
Technical fluency to engage scientists and translate physics for customers
Experience working with government agencies, national labs, and/or large industrial customers.
Working Style
Builder. You write the first playbook rather than wait for one.
Rigorous. You separate what customers say from what they will sign.
Credible. You never overstate what the technology can do today.
Persuasive: You know how to get into the room where it happens and convince people to work with us.
Location
In-person at The Engine, 750 Main Street, Cambridge, MA, with up to 30% travel expected (may change)
Compensation and benefits
Base salary of $130K - $180K plus meaningful early-stage equity.
Medical, dental, and vision coverage
